Clinical study of mouth and submental cysts

Abstract
During the past 10 years from 1975 to 1984, 34 patients were confirmed as the cysts of the mouth and submental region by the histopathological study at the Department of Otolaryngology, Chonnam University Medical School Hospital.
A clinical study of those cases was made and the following results were obtained.
1) Sex ratio of male to female was 1:1 and prevalent age was first and second decade.
2) The most frequent presenting symptom was painless mass (55.9%) and the highest incidence (38.2%) of duration was 6 months to 1 year.
3) The most frequent types of histopathology were the mucous retention cyst (35.2%) and the ranula (35.2%) and the most frequent site was the floor of the mouth.
4) The prevalent age was first decade in the mucous retention cyst and the ranula and second decade in the epidermoid cyst.
5) The mobile, soft, 2 x 3cm sized single mass was the most common feature of the cysts.
6) The most frequent surgical approach was the intraoral method under the general anesthesia.
7) After surgery, the wound infection in 4 cases and the recurrence in 3 cases were noted.
